This is for the best.

palaceoffunk:

So, I was thinking about BBC Sherlock fandom’s hate-on for Sally Donovan, and just earlier today I was talking with Maria about Tara Thorton’s shitty treatment in True Blood.

And then I made myself a list.

You’re not fooling anyone, fandom. I know what’s up.

I can’t speak for fandom as a while, but I’ll try to explain my like/dislike for some of those characters.  First of all, I don’t like Sally Donovan because she’s a narrow minded bitch on Sherlock.  But I’m pretty sure that her character is supposed to be unlikeable, so I don’t feel bad disliking her.  And I don’t like Guin in Merlin because I never liked the Guineviere/Lancelot/Arthur triangle, and I just can’t separate many long years of dislike from the retelling (even knowing that her character is different than the usual).

On the other hand, I LOVE Tara on True Blood. In the books, she’s only barely a character, and it was great that the writers gave her something more to do than sell Sookie clothes (even though most of her plot lines revolve around her character getting screwed over). I like that she’s strong, and cranky, and real. And I love Freema in everything she does.  She is one of my favorite companions.

I don’t know who doesn’t like Mercedes. I will say, though, that her character doesn’t get enough plot love, but in an ensemble cast that big, that’s true for nearly ALL the best characters on Glee.

And sadly, I don’t know who any of the rest of those girls are (although 8 and 9 look familiar). But my point is, sometimes fans don’t like characters for valid reasons, not race-related ones.
