“Petty partisan issues”? Like supporting marriage equality and adding it to the party platform? Like protecting a woman’s/uterus owner’s right to choose? Like providing healthcare for upwards of 30 million more Americans? Like saving the American auto industry? Like authorizing stem cell research? Those are “petty partisan issues” to you? For fucking real? How can you not acknowledge the incredible changes that he’s made? And how DARE you refer to MY healthcare and choices as “petty.” Fuck you.

Your argument is basically, “Forgetting every good thing Obama has ever done, why do you still like Obama? If you take away all of his social and economic achievements, there’s practically nothing there!” Which… yeah?

To respond point-by-point to the five things you disagree with:

1. I agree. It’s awful that he expanded the war on drugs and refuses to move toward decriminalizing marijuana. I very much resent that it’s not on the party platform this year.

But there’s an election in two months, and the only other person with a shot of winning would be worse.

2. I wasn’t sure what you’re referring to, so I looked it up, and here’s what I found:

Of the White House effort, (Center for American Progress executive vice president) Stachelberg says, “The White House will instead launch a multipronged effort to better address workplace discrimination against gay and transgender Americans.”

So they didn’t refuse to sign it on principle; they just have a different long-term approach to accomplish the same thing. And according to Towleroad, there are whispers that he didn’t sign the executive order until after the election. So, once again: this is an election year. There are two people who could win. Do you think Mitt Romney would sign that executive order?

Also, Barack Obama turned the tide in the nation’s opinion of marriage equality, and for the first time ever, it’s a plank of the Democratic platform. He’s not the perfect LGBT rights champion, but uhhh, see also: Mitt Romney as the alternative.

3. I’m going to quote a great post I read earlier about this one:

The NDAA is the military budget. The Obama administration spoke against the indefinite detention clause. The GOP prevented it from passing without it until the point where it had to be passed with that clause. Obama included a signing statement opposing that provision. That battle was a guaranteed political win for the Republicans. If Obama has held off past December 31, our soldiers and veterans would not get paid, their health care would stop, their families’ health care would stop, etc. Imagine the campaign ads after that. Not only from a nationalistic perspective, but from a jobs perspective. The military is the largest employer in the US. Things would not have been pretty if it hadn’t passed. I oppose that one clause tacked onto the budget—as does Obama—but to put the blame on him as though he authored or supported it is dishonest as fuck.

ACTA has been signed (informal approval) by several countries, meaning they approve of the general concept, but it has not been ratified (formal approval) by a single one. Not the US, not anyone.

And SOPA didn’t make it to Obama’s desk, so regardless of his feelings about it, he never signed it.

4. “Reinvigorating”? That’s vague and not a specific enough argument to debate. Do I think the Patriot Act should be repealed/reformed? Yes. Has it actually allowed journalists to gather more information via the Freedom of Information Act clause? Also yes.

Also, I don’t know if this information has made it to you yet, but we really only have two viable choices this November, and I don’t think the other guy is running on repealing the Patriot Act.

5. Pretty sure he ended a war, so. He also added $1.4 billion to veteran services and ended the 18-year media blackout on deceased soldiers returning to the US. Like, yeah, I’m a good liberal who wants to end all the wars. Obama could be doing better. But did you watch the RNC??? Condoleezza Rice and John McCain basically called for us to start a bunch of new wars in addition to the ones we’re stuck in. Hey, which of the two viable candidates for president were they stumping for??

Soooooo yeah. The reason people are extra pumped about Obama this week is because it’s the DNC. The conventions are basically three-day pep rallies, and I’m rooting for the home team — even if they’ve suffered some pretty disappointing losses in the past.

If you’re a die-hard liberal, your options are a guy who tries to do as much as possible to support your views while doing his best to negotiate with the other side (a necessary evil, btw), and a guy who wishes it was 1940 and is going to do everything in his power to set us back half a century.

Do you think die-hard conservatives, who don’t like Romney, are going to vote for Obama because Romney isn’t 100% their guy? NO! They’re going to tow the party line because they understand the alternative is ever worse. If you’re farther to the left than Obama, and you DON’T vote for him, you are REALLY going to to hate the country under Romney.
