Not sure which is better: Ann Friedman’s fascinating piece on the social barriers afflicting the modern horny lady, or the photoset of Super Serious Boning Animals that accompanies it.

Both amazing. Though the piece made my head ache as, shocker, I’m an aggressor and love that but I’m seen as desperate or otherwise sometimes. I usually say fuck it but it is so obnoxious.

Film actress Esther Williams has died at 91.

Despite being a musicals fan, I don’t think I’ve ever seen an Esther Williams film straight through. Since childhood, I’ve known what they look like. And, thanks to That’s Entertainment!, feel that I’ve seen all the best bits of her MGM oeuvre.

She did not, from what I read today, have an easy life, between abusive or parasitic men and the wear and tear (ruptured eardrums, broken neck) of doing all her own water work. And, from what she wrote in her autobiography The Million Dollar Mermaid, her co-workers weren’t any help.

According to the book, when she, in likely her biggest non-swimming role, made 1949’s Take Me Out to the Ball Game, Stanley Donen and co-star Gene Kelly, who co-wrote the story and collaborated on the musical staging, were utter dicks who made her the butt of their jokes, an experience she describes as “pure misery.”

She also can’t have been pleased, eight years later, when Silk Stockings featured Janis Paige in the role of a dipsomaniacal swimming movie star who constantly whacks at her head to knock out the water though she’s nowhere near a pool and who answers a reporter’s question regarding what she thinks of Tolstoy (whose War and Peace she’s filming as a musical)by saying, “There’s absolutely no truth to the rumors; we’re just good friends.”

At any rate, she left behind a ton of onscreen charisma and some of the most OTT musical numbers in film history (the above done by Busby Berkeley, somehow unsurprisingly). That’s Entertainment really is the best collection of, and introduction to, her work you’ll see, I think.

Oh, please watch one. She was a marvelous actress: funny, charismatic, gorgeous, and so much more than a gimmick. This is sad news.

it passes the Bechdel test and has lots of great female characters

(the gender ratio might be close to equal now that I think about it)

like a sweet, proud, tough sex worker who takes a lover outside her job and no one cares

and her sister, a mayor running a semi-frontier mining town

and an alien girl who might be a Grand Mystic Hero and is ruthless, reserved, loyal, and vulnerable

and an alien woman who weaves nefarious schemes while looking and acting angelic

and another minor but brilliant alien woman who runs a medical clinic with the sheer force of her dry, exasperated sarcasm

also there’s a lot of diversity

I’m not just talking aliens either

and nobody makes a big deal about sexual anything

I mean, they even discussed polyamory like it was a normal variation in romantic relationships

two dudes and one lady, no less

and the worldbuilding is pretty decent and getting better over time

the plots aren’t blowing me away yet, but it’s been an entertaining way to spend an hour every week

and barring some fanservice it’s been really damn progressive

Literally the only thing I can’t stand about Defiance is the nagging feeling that Syfy threw over all its OTHER original programming to promote it. Because ^^ all that is true and awesome but ugh Syfy your marketing dept needs to get its head out of its ass.

#But yes #Defiance #is a really good show for a lot of reasons #Although I’d like to point out in defense of #Warehouse 13 #that Warehouse ALSO accompliseshes a lot of these things #equal gender ratios #queer characters whose sexuality is not a plot point #diversity that just IS its not questioned #less sex in general and the fact that Pete seems to be the only one having it kinda sucks #but Warehouse also has older women who are bosses and bamfs without EVER having to justify that #and their age is NEVER made into an issue or considered a detriment #so yeah #ugh #sorry #this wasn’t supposed to be about Warehouse I know #but I am apparently still pissed about the cancellation (via racethewind10)
